One of Marvellous Melbourne’s fabulous hidden secrets is the magnificent collection of art adorning the walls of the Victorian Arts Centre’s theatre complex. I sometimes suspect that the majority of the theatres’ patrons are blissfully unaware of the importance of the wonderful collection surrounding them as they gather in the foyers awaiting their productions and performances. There are brilliant works by major Australian artists such as Arthur Boyd, Sid Nolan, Jeffrey Smart, and John Olsen, among others. Part of the magic is their ready availability. Unlike the exhibits in the neighbouring galleries of the NGV, these are available for the enjoyment of the passing public day and night. I rarely pass the doors on St Kilda Road without a quick visit to refresh my spirit.
At one end of the complex is a wonderful collection of Western Desert art. Here are my snap shots of these exciting paintings.
